keluarga!
this week has been an interesting one for sure. going to KL was insane!!! I have only been in KK for three weeksish, and I was so weirded out going to a huge nice city! it looks so different from KK. different buildings, different trees, different people, but it was fascinating! a really cool city. I would love to serve there. Sister norton was being all funny saying how trashy KL was compared to Singapore. hahaha. she's gonna have culture shock if she comes to Sabah or Sarawak in east malaysia! it was so good to see her. when I saw her, I started screaming and crying hahahaha. I hope we can serve together later.

so Elder Bednar came to speak to us! he was so funny! he was like, this isn't going to be a "I speak and you write notes" kind of a thing. he told us he was going to ask questions and he wanted us to ask questions as well. I asked a prophet a question!!!! a few things I loved most. he talked about how as latter day saints we can't be "objects" we have to be "agents" meaning we have to act and do things to develop our faith. going to church, sitting passively and listening, blah blah, is more like us just being objects. people tell us things, we listen, we maybe do, and then it's over. he asked how we were supposed to develop faith like that. which is an interesting question! we need to study, and ask questions, and research, and pray, and be agents and very active in developing faith. I agree very much. I am going to try to apply that to missionary work. not just teach people, but help them to study and to learn on their own as well. it's kindof complicated, and I am struggling to explain. but it was true.

another thing he spoke about really made me cry. he was saying, (as we were sitting in a small little room in a building where some people go to church in KL) that the church is growing. he made a prophecy, and said we would come back to malaysia one day. maybe twenty, thirty years, and it will be so different. there will probably be church buildings. and there will be members. and there will be lots of people that served missions and went to the temple. and maybe even have a temple. but he said one day we will come back, we will be blown away, and we will be able to say "I was a part of this." I lost it at that point. and then he quoted my favorite scripture D&C 64:33. small things. how cool is that? I am SUCH a small small thing working as hard as I know how to build up the kingdom of God in malaysia. and even though I am a super small part, I am still a part.

he also said it's a misconception that people think missionaries come back with strong testimonies because they have "talked themselves into it" but the truth is, as missionaries, we testify of the different parts of the gospel every single day. all day. and when we testify, the Holy Ghost gives witness to us that what we are saying is true. of course this happens, we can read in the scriptures that testifying and letting us know of truth is one of the Holy Ghost's jobs. but I had never applied that principle to missionaries and our testimonies. very cool right? oh and I got to shake his hand:)

okay here is a really really unbelievable story. at least for me. so it was last week, maybe thursday. sister hite had just gotten back from singapore, and she was so so tired. I was super sick with the flu/cold and I felt awful as well. we needed to do our weekly planning, and then after that we were going to take a quick thirty minute nap instead of eating dinner, and then we were going to go to work. as we did our planning, we started to feel a little better so we decided to forget the nap and just go out to work. we headed to one of our areas called Beverley, because we had plans to try to find some less active and inactive members that lived there. plus we had two appointments. so we go to Beverley, and both of our appointments wouldn't let us in. a bit discouraging. so then we go try to find two of the less active members houses, we find them, and they didn't come to the door. also discouraging. meanwhile as we are wandering around our area, I was trying to talk to the people that were standing on the street. nobody was letting us talk!!! not one person. even when I tried to ask them stuff not relating to church. so we had had like fifteen shut downs in a row. we were going to try to find this one last less active member we had on our list and we headed to phase 5, building X of the area. where he lived. we walked around and couldn't find building X! so weird! so we were lost, kindof trying to figure out what to do, when this very dark Indian man was walking across the street in the opposite direction. he didn't look happy, and he was walking very quickly. I wanted to ask him if he could help us, but I immediately thought no he probably will just shut us down too. but the next thing I knew, my mouth was open and I was trying to get his attention. so I ran over, asked him for help, and he said there was no block X in phase 5, and that someone had told us the wrong address. but he was very nice! so I started talking with him and asked a few questions and then asked if he was christian. he was! and then he said, "you two teach about the gospel don't you?" OH MY GOSH! that's what I was thinking! so we started talking a bit about the Restoration, and he invited us to teach him more right then. he had a lot of concerns, especially about the godhead being three beings. he had also been "anti-ed" so he had tons and tons of opinions about us that were completely false. but he was so open, and he let us answer, and he was so encouraging! he listened! we read from the Book of Mormon, and without us saying anything, he immediately said "this is just like the Bible" and we were just boggled! so we taught him the whole first lesson, committed him to pray, to read, and set up a return appointment for tomorrow night. before we left, he asked if he could feed us dinner because we came to teach him about Christ. so we went to dinner, and at dinner we just talked a lot about his life. he was from KL, his parents were from India. they were both alcoholics, and he was abused very bad his whole life. his mom has died, and his dad just had a really bad stroke that left him paralyzed. he said that he is alll alone in KK, doesn't have friends, and his heart is broken. he said one day he started reading the bible, and he felt better. so he joined a church, and he said he felt better. very cool! but then he dropped the bomb on us, right at the end, as we were walking to the bus stop to go back home. he said, "just this morning, I prayed to God and asked for someone to come to teach me the gospel of Jesus Christ." and my mouth completely dropped. I said "Edward! this isn't a coincidence! God answers prayers, I know He does!!" and he said that he knew. and he was very glad to have talked with us and been able to learn from us. we haven't gotten to teach him again yet, that's tomorrow, so I'm not sure what will happen. if he will accept the true gospel or if he won't, but we gave him a book of mormon, taught him about joseph smith, taught him how to pray, we bore testimony, the strongest testimony I have ever felt in my life, and we gave him all the tools. now we have to see if he will be an agent and act for himself to see if it's true or not. but as we were sitting on the bus, we looked up the address of where we were supposed to go and it turns out, we had written it down correct. we needed to go to phase 3, we just went to phase 5 instead. if we would have looked again, we would have noticed our mistake and not met edward. if we wouldn't have felt better during planning and decided to take a nap during dinner instead of skipping it and going out, we wouldn't have met Edward. if our appointments wouldn't have fallen through, we wouldn't have met Edward. seriously, we would have missed him if we were even just 30 seconds later to that spot because he was walking so fast. 30 SECONDS. 30 seconds and it never would have happened. I now know, more than I ever thought possible, that the Spirit leads us as missionaries. nothing we did made that happen! we were just walking trying to go to our appointments! and the Spirit led us to Edward, so his prayers could be answered. I went home and just cried. I don't know what will happen to him, but I pray we can continue to have the blessing of teaching him.

two funny stories before I'm out of time. first, one about Britney Spears. so I was on a small little bus, like usual, everyone crammed in there, and this man leans over and says in malay that I look just like Britney Spears. so evyerone on the bus turns around and looks and starts shaking there heads and saying yes she does!!!! so then I looked at him, lowered my voice a bit, and said "can you keep a secret?" he said he could, and then I said, "I AM Britney Spears!!" and there was this huge gasp and silence, and then my companion started dying laughing and so did I and then they caught on and it was super funny. haha. I love Malaysians.

I also had a run in with a cicak. a lizard. my companion is deathly afraid, and they are always in our house so I was running around with a box trying to trap it but I was also scared so we both were screaming and I slammed the box down at one point but I only got his tail and then he charged at me!!!!!!!! charged with his tail sticking straight in the air!!!!!! I jumped completely over the top of our three foot tall counter and stood on a chair, still screaming. she locked herself in our room and started crying/screaming. basically, it would have been the most pathetic thing on earth to watch. but it was terrifying! like it charged at me! hahaha. silly silly girls.

I am out of time!! always so fast ah! I pray everyone is still healthy and happy? I'm jealous about the cabin, I've had a few dreams about it:)
I miss you all and I love you all so so much. thank you for your prayers. until next week!

May 17, 2011

okay. hello!!!!!!!!!!!! I put so many exclamations because I am so happy today. this whole week has been incredible. I don't have much time left but I'll try to give some details.
I'm going to KL on sunday! to meet elder bednar! wild right? I'm nervous but excited. I'm not sure how long we will stay, so I don't know if I'll get to get out and see a lot of kuala lumpur but I get to see sister norton!!!!! I almost cried when I heard this! I miss her! my companion sister hite is incredible though. we have a lot of fun and work hard. she pushes me a ton. I was in charge of the phone yesterday, which seems stupid but it's scary! people call all day! but I did well enough. no one hung up on me:)

the other day, I pulled a tick out of my skin on my arm. the little devil still had it's legs and everything. it was very disgusting. I actually am only writing about it now, because I think it's time for my denial to stop. it was a mortifying experience. glad I found it though!

so I am spoiled. I will try to figure out how to send pictures, but every day during studies I sit on our deck and look out at the gorgeous blue ocean. it almost looks like kauai. it is GORGEOUS here. I am so spoiled. I teared up the other day because I knew that in a couple months when I'm transferred and in a year and half when I'm home I will miss sitting on the deck and studying. it's incredible. I kindof want you to come pick me up so that you can see all these things and meet all the incredible incredible people here. and eat all the weird food, and delicious indian food! it's amazing.

so we have been teaching two people, Jerry and Lazaias, and they are getting baptized on the 29th!!!! it has been a journey with them but they are both so positive and their faith is so strong. it's incredible to see the change that has happened in them just since I've been here. and they have such a desire to change. and last night when we saw them, they just smiled! like huge smiles all night when we were talking to them about baptism and the holy ghost. it makes me so happy!!!!!! I'm still on cloud nine about it.

heres a bit of heartbreaking news. there is a recent convert named Leni, and she is very very poor. she has three little kids, and her husband spends all their money on alchohol. so she has nothing. and we went over there and her and I just bonded immediately. but I noticed her little three year old daughters elbow was super swollen so I asked what happened. turns out, she fell off of their little stilt house, onto the ground, and she thought she broke her elbow. it was like black. and she had no money to go to the hospital so her daughter had been suffering for a week!! it almost killed me. it brought back the same feelings in africa. so I did my best to look at her arm, we went and got some ice and so I sat with the little girl next to me holding ice on her elbow to try to help with the swelling. I told Leni to try to keep her from putting a lot of weight on it and everything and did my best to give her some other advice about how to treat it, and we went back yesterday and Leni was like SISTER JENSEN! look at her arm!! and I looked, and she could move it, she could feel her fingers, she could grip, still very bruised but hardly swollen. I started crying. I wanted to scream and jump. it was amazing. the Lord blesses us if we have faith. He does! she couldn't move her arm and now she can. what a miracle.

so last week I was sitting on the deck and wondering why I was having such a hard time. and I was in a total pity party. so then I took out my pictures of home, and I was looking at them all and I noticed how happy I was in every picture. and then i took out my journal my friends from the mtc had written in and they all said how I always smiled so much and to never lose that. so then I started thinking, why am I not smiling more here?? I'm  a happy happy person! why not in KK? so then I got a smack in the face and realized my bad attitude and my fear was killing my faith. killing the Spirit. so I repented and decided the next day I was going to start smiling again. super simple. guess what happened? EVERYTHING CHANGED! my language, though definitely not perfect, completely changed. the people were nice and I had the Spirit and I had a lot of great moments during my studies and it just changed my life. needless to say, I learned my lesson. and I'm grateful I did so quickly! now I'm not wasting any time not smiling. this work is incredible and so are the people. I'm so so so grateful to be here.

my time is up!! I'm sorry that went so quick! I will try to write a letter as well. I look forward to yours:)
I love you so much. thank you for your prayers, I know they are a big reason I am doing so much better this week.
I love you I love you. I pray everyone is safe and healthy.
until next week!!

MTC days

Pictures after 30 hours travel and pouring rain!

Sister Jensen and Sister Norton (MTC comps)
Sisters Kubota, Jensen, Ferguson and Norton

May 10, 2011

okay so I already have like so little time on the internet. so many people were super sweet to email me and I was trying to read with lightening speed and write everyone back but it was difficult!! sorry sorry. letters would be easier because there isn't a time limit on reading and writing letters...my address in KK is this, if you want to get a letter directly to me. otherwise you can send to singapore, I've heard that's a guaranteed chance of getting there and this address maybe isn't quite so good...but KK isn't a ghetto city so I think it would be fine. okay here it is:
Unit B 7-12 Block B
Marina Court Condominium
88000 Kota Kinabalu, Sabah
Malaysia

so in a nut shell, this is my experience thus far:
the Spirit guides what we study and do and say. I know this. yesterday during personal study I was studying the scriptures for lesson one, and I got really hooked on scriptures about God loving us. I'm not sure why. I kept thinking to myself, "I shouldn't be spending so much time on this subject, I need to study more topics...." but for some reason I just kept studying that topic. well, later that day we had a lesson with an investigator and he was having a really rough time and he was questioning if God loved him. guess who used every single scripture I had studied earlier that day? oh yeah. one of them literally brought him to tears after he read it. it was an incredible experience for me. that wasn't me that did that, I would have never known I needed to study those verses if the Spirit wouldn't have guided me there. very incredible and humbling experience.

everyone here thinks I'm super tall and fat. and they aren't afraid to say it. hahahahaha. another humbling experience.

also, everyone will say things about me when I walk by, and I can usually understand them. just cat call-ish things. so then I turn around and say something back to them in malay and the looks on the mens faces are always so priceless. their jaws like drop. "orang putih cakap malayu!!!!!!!" hehe. the little pleasures in life.

I ate the most amazing thing the other day that will surely kill me in the future. it's called the Ramley burger. basically you buy it from a little grill thing on the side of the road. it's grilled bun, with chicken burger, wrapped in fried egg, with cheese (fake cheese, I am sure) with cabbage, lots of chili sauce, and some other hot asian sauces. basically it brought tears to my eyes it was so delicious. so disgustingly delicious.

also, I have gotten my fair share of door slams:) another very humbling thing. very difficult. but then every once in a while you get people that want to hear more. that is always an incredible thing as well. I think of dad often. his mission he had to knock doors a ton right? we thankfully have some people we are teaching right now so we only knock doors maybe an hour or two every day. but it is difficult! rejection is difficult, especially when you know the value of what they are rejecting. you just have to keep going. at least that's my experience.

I'm sorry, I am out of time!! I didn't even get to read everyone's emails:( really sorry about that. but please know I love you and I pray for you. please be safe.

May 4, 2011. She Made It!!

so here is a nice and quick little update.
I made it to Singapore. I slept for 14 hours on the plane. I have attempted contacting seven people, all but one completely shut me down. I ate indian food with my hands, and I feel like I'm going to barf. good though. now we are doing orientationish stuff but I still don't know how long I will be here.
I will be serving in Kota Kinabalu, my companion is Sister Hite. she seems cool, but I haven't really gotten to talk to her yet. I feel very overwhelmed! I'm not sure what all to say. In my area people speak all very good malay, absolutely no english. so I'm gonna have to put my rhino skin on and tough it out. I pray my language will come quick. anyway. I hope you all are nice and happy.
I love you very much

April 26, 2011

so it has only been like three days since I last wrote you, and I don't know what to really say that would be interesting to anyone...

sunday was easter so we had an easter egg hunt. sister kubota and sister norton are super competitive and in to the whole easter egg hunt thing, so I volunteered to be the person that hid all the eggs. great choice:) while hiding the eggs outside, some elders gave me the idea to put something scary in one of the eggs. five minutes later we were looking under rocks for spiders or worms or something disgusting. we found about three worms and a snail, so we put them in one of the eggs. the easy to find eggs (to make sure they'd get it!) so a bit later when they had found all of the eggs and we were back inside, I got out my camera and said that they needed to open them. so sister kubota starts opening all of them so sister norton couldn't, and she gets to the one with the worm. hahahahahahahahaha. her face changed from an evil little grin to complete and utter terror in about three seconds. HYSTERICAL! she threw the egg and started crying/screaming at the top of her lungs, and sister norton ran out of the room with tears in her eyes, and then sister ferguson picked up the worm egg and proceeded to taunt sister kubota that she was going to throw it on her. so, sister kubota picks up a chair in an attempt to defend herself, while still crying/screaming hysterically. this went on for about five minutes. I almost peed my pants I was laughing so hard. I'm gonna miss my sisters.

the MTC started a new schedule program and yesterday was the first day. I won't lie, it was soooooooooooooooooooooo long. we had over two hours of personal study where we can't study our language. and then we only had one hour to study language! it was so rough! I'm sure it will be good for the new missionaries, but for us it is difficult because we were so used to the old schedule. I'm not sure if it was because of the schedule change or what, but I was just really really super grumpy yesterday. the type of day that i would talk to dad and we would do something and both get in a lot of trouble. haha. I'm not sure what my deal is but I felt really bad. but today is so much better already. I feel like I need to apologize to you too because I was so grumpy. simply because days like this when I'm home I get into a lot of trouble.

NEWS UPDATE! there is a blizzard outside right now! and I sent my cold weather clothes, including my coat, home already! hahaha walking to the temple today is going to be a lot of fun. it's my last opportunity to go to the temple for a year and a half! that thought really makes me sad. I wish we could go on the mission. i have had so many really really special experiences at the temple up here so i'm bummed:( go for me if you can!

so I was studying missionary work the other day, and I was taken to Ezekiel chapter 34. a really cool chapter! I particularly love verse 16, where it says 'I will seek that which was lost, and bring again that which was driven away" talking about Christ and his lost sheep. isn't that cool? the whole chapter is cool and i would recommend reading it. I'm determined to not be the lazy shephard that doesn't try hard enough to find Christ's lost sheep. I don't want anyone to be able to say that I am included in verse 6, not seeking after anyone. but it's a cool chapter.

tonight we have our devotional, it is rumored to be Elder Oaks...another apostle! we will see if we are that lucky.

oh, and go to this website (at least I think it's this website, or one quite similar)www.interviewproject.davidlynch.com something like that. it is really cool. when we practice teaching, we go to this website and listen to peoples story and then we talk about what part of the gospel would really help them at that moment in their life. it's a really cool exercise and a really cool website. there's also one called 8 million people or something like that. you should check it out.

sister norton and i have to teach tomorrow night for the new missionaries...that's going to be interesting. there are actors who come in and pretend to be investigators and we teach them while all the new missionaries watch. no pressure! I'm actually excited though. we will be teaching in english, and we haven't gotten to do that for soooooo long. teaching in english is so much easier than teaching in malay:)

basically this week is just a normal week, with the exception of tomrrow because we host the new sisters in the afternoon and then teach all night, but after that we just have class class class. we get to start packing on saturday. can you believe i am finally leaving!!!!!? ALAHAI!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! as you can see, I'm quite excited. especially flying on singapore airlines:) how did I get so lucky! we did the time change though and we are pretty sure it's an 18 hour flight. hahaha. lovely right? good thing we will be on singapore air.

I apologize that this email is so scatterbrained. I'm having a hard time thinking in sentences, especially english sentences right now. I'm just a little overwhelmed. but I love you all so very very much. thank you for your support.

oh, and unless you are close and want to put a letter in the snail mail like, soon, I might be gone before i get any of them. so don't send anymore mail to the MTC if you don't think it will get here by next monday. probably send it to the Singapore address. i would love to hear from you all still, even though I'll be halfway around the world :)

I love you all! saya mengasihi semua kamu! say berdoa untuk semua kamu! saya rindu semua kamu! love you love you.
